At KENEC, we create meaningful connections between neurotypical high school volunteers and students with special needs, all through the power of shared goals and consistent support.
Each summer, we pair a volunteer with a student and their family. The partnership begins with a collaborative orientation meeting involving the student’s parent or guardian and the volunteer. In this meeting, they work together to:
▶ Establish a goal to work toward over the summer
▶ Set clear boundaries and expectations
▶ Brainstorm engagement strategies tailored to the student’s interests
▶ Decide on a convenient meeting place and time
▶ Begin building a sense of trust and familiarity
Once the groundwork is set, the student and volunteer meet weekly throughout the summer to work toward their goal.
Goals vary depending on the student’s interests and needs. Some students focus on recreational goals such as:
▶ Learning to ride a bike
▶ Playing a sport like basketball or soccer
▶ Exploring new hobbies like art, music, or swimming
▶ Building independence through outings in the community
Others may pursue educational goals, such as:
▶ Improving reading and writing skills
▶ Practicing math or school readiness activities
▶ Developing social skills through conversation and play
Regardless of the goal, every partnership is designed to promote growth, confidence, and connection. Our approach empowers both students and volunteers to learn from each other and build lasting relationships that extend beyond the summer.
